MERCRUISER / Volvo Penta 3.0L HEAD GASKET INSTALLATION
…Before installing the head gasket, it is important to clean and inspect the surface of the engine block. If the block unevenness exceeds 0.010”, the entire surface must be leveled/sanded, the head surface must always be polished to make it perfectly flat.
If this is not checked and done, there is a risk of so called “blow” of the head gasket or burning and water getting inside the engine… The second important element during head gasket installation is to tighten the head mounting bolts in the correct order and with the proper tightening force. This should be done in three stages. The tightening sequence and torque/force are given below in the drawings and diagrams . Some service instructions for the mercruiser/volvo penta 3.0L engine state that the tightening force should be checked again after the engine has warmed up the head bolts, but it is not written clearly. Some mechanics do it, some don’t.
